Keeping it Real

This Is Love – Six Days Of Growing In Intimacy With God

As I listen to the voices of Christians around me, I hear a hunger. A hunger for more of God. A hunger for a closer walk with Him. A hunger for deeper intimacy with Him.

And that same cry echoes in my heart as well.

Here’s the thing: We’re created with that hunger for God. It’s sometimes called “divine discontent” where there will always be a longing for more of God, because that’s also a longing for eternity. It’s a chasing after God that fills us up and keeps us yearning at the same time.

But, after giving our lives to Him, after tasting the goodness of God, after once being satiated by His sweet presence, we tend to get distracted in our walk with Him. We tend to chase after the “gods” which we think can satisfy us more quickly and effectively, whether that’s a fancy career, a bigger audience, a sought-after promotion, a relationship, a sizeable bank balance, a number on a weighing scale, the approval of others…. and the list goes on. And the more we chase after those idols and the more they meet our fleeting desires for recognition and reward, the less we seek after God. We’re left with a brittle and dry walk with God. We know there’s something missing. More specifically, we know there’s Someone missing.

Yet, because of God’s great love and faithfulness, He still pursues us. He calls us back to Himself. He still wants to be your First Love because He knows that everything else is just a temporary fix.

He reminds you of what love really is.

This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1 John 4: 10)

My newest devotional on YouVersion, “This Is Love” is based on this verse. It’s a simple little six-day devotional. But I do believe it will help us grow in our intimacy with God.

You can download the PDF version of the devotional here or you can download it on YouVersion here.

God sees our heart and knows our desire to draw close to Him. And the most blessed assurance we have is that He draws near to us, too.
